VegeSprinkler - Smart Distributed Sprinkler Controller Details

Save water, power and money. With the Smart Distributed Sprinkler Controller (VegeSprinkler), you can stop wasting expensive water and electricity. The beauty of this sprinkler controller is that it will quickly pay for itself as it only uses the precise amount of water that your lawn and plants need.

Within minutes you will be able to setup the VegeSprinkler, through its web interface using your phone or computer's web browser.

    Uses Distributed Sensors

The VegeSprinkler works with any available cloud based sensor. Cloud based sensors can be placed anywhere in your yard, garden or farm where Internet is available. This eliminates long cable runs from sensors to controllers. Also since all of the data is in the cloud, it is fast and easy to retrieve and view sensor data, so that you can fine tune your system.

The most popular sensors are of course are our VH400 soil moisture sensors, and our THERM200 soil temperature sensors. When coupled with a VegeSprinkler Wifi Sensor VegeSprinkler, these sensors become cloud based sensors, that can be read by any controller on the Internet that knows their secret key.

You configure the VegeSprinkler by setting up a watering schedule, as you would with any standard sprinkler controller. Then you configure cloud based sensor inputs to the controller, by entering their web address, thresholds, and conditions.

For example you can specify that a sprinkler turn off if the soil moisture is 35%, or if the temperature is below 50°F (10°C) to prevent damaging your plants from watering during cold weather.

    Ideal For Control Freaks

A few traditional sprinkler clocks have primitive rain sensors thrown on as an after thought. These rain sensors consist of a couple of plates mounted to a sponge, when the sponge gets wet from rain it expands and closes the contact sensor, shutting down every valve on your system, until the sponges dry out.

We contrast this to the VegeSprinkler which allows independent laser precision control of each valve. Every valve can be fine tuned to a set of advanced cloud based sensors independently of the other valves. One valve may be tied to a temperature sensor and moisture sensor in your lawn, and another tied to a relative humidity air sensor in a green house. The combinations are limitless.

Built-in Security For Your Controller and Sensors

The VegeSprinkler uses TLS 1.2 SSL for secure Internet connections, allowing it to do secure HTTPS posts to servers. If you don't care about security, you can still post using regular HTTP.

The VegeSprinkler comes with the most commonly used website certificates, or using our certificate tool, you can put on your own.

    Fast and Easy Setup

You can configure the VegeSprinkler and add it to your local WiFi network by using a browser on your phone or PC.

Once it has connected to your network you can plug in a USB thumb drive, and it will write the IP address to a file. This IP address allows you to configure it through it's web interface.

To configure it, press a button, and it will become a mini web server on your network, and serve up configuration pages. Examples of the configuration pages are provided below.

See the Quick Start Guide for step by step instructions.

    Works Seamlessly with VegeCloud

While it's possible to go it on your own and write your own server, to control the sprinkler controller, through itself web API. Why bother when it works seamlessly with VegeCloud out of the box.

VegeCloud.com allows you to store your data, and allow you visualize it with graphs, and allow you to set triggers on your data so that you can get text alerts and email messages, when your sensors have passed a threshold value. VegeCloud also gives you access to Alexa.

Control and Monitor With the Convenience of Alexa

You can use voice commands to ask Alexa about sensor values, and to override the normal schedule. For example, if you want to stop the sprinklers from coming on while you are having a party on the grass, you can tell alexa to turn them off at a particular time.

Voice commands are much faster and easier than pulling out a phone, and opening an app or web browser. Alexa is a paid service on VegeCloud which costs under a dollar/month.

Rugged and Waterproof for Long Life in Harsh Conditions

You can put this box outside in the rain or snow. The rugged ABS plastic box has silicone rubber gaskets making it waterproof. All of the cable entry points use cable glands, so that no water or insects can get in.

The box has flanges and screw holes for easy mounting, so that you can put it anywhere.

Keeps Running Even When Internet is Down

If your Internet goes down - no problem. The will keep running its internally stored schedule. When it is able to connect to the Internet again, it will resume querying cloud sensors to make watering decisions.

Current Sensor Makes Trouble Shooting Easy

The controller uses a tiny current sensor, to detect the electrical current of the valve. This is useful in trouble shouting your system. You can quickly bring up the controllers web page, and see if there are electrical shorts, or breaks in your wire. If you happen, to have a short on one of your valves, it will automatically stop that valve from being run in the schedule.

"So far I'm very impressed by Vegetronix products. I work in IoT professionally but don't have the time to put together my own microcontroller-based solution. You've solved all the critical IoT issues (TLS, low-energy, find out local IP address, send to cloud, etc) not to mention your magic soil moisture sensor. Everything I've tried so far (VegeHub and Air temp sensor) is simple and easy to use and worked on the first try. Well done."

Smart Distributed Sprinkler Controller - Battery Considerations

If you intend on powering the VegeSprinkler from a battery, battery selection is very important. Not all batteries types act the same in different environmental conditions. For example alkaline batteries do not do well in cold temperatures.

For temperature extremes Lithium Ion batteries are best, with a typical range of -40°C to 60°C. If you need off the shelf disposable batteries we recommend Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries. Their 9V battery has a 700mAh capacity, and their AA have a 3500mAh capacity. If you use the AA batteries we recommend that you get a 9V or 12V AA battery holder to supply power to the VegeSprinkler.

Rechargeable 3.7V Lithium Ion 18650 batteries are also a good choice, for environmental extremes, and for long life. Two batteries in series is sufficient to power the VegeSprinkler.

Because batteries off-gas acid, especially in hot environments, never place batteries inside the VegeSprinkler enclosure, as this will corrode and destroy the electronics, over time.

    Flashing Root Certificates with USB

Root certificates allow the VegeSprinkler to communicate with servers using secure HTTPS. The VegeSprinkler has factory installed root certificates for the most common IOT servers. Some web sites will require SSL certificates that are not already included on the VegeSprinkler. See the VegeSprinkler Root Certificate Manual for information on updating root certificates.

    USB Port

The VegeSprinkler has a USB port which is used to update root certificates. To install device drivers for the USB, and to configure it, see the VegeSprinkler USB Manual.
